Today’s lunch was an exercise in flexibility. Duane Reade is NYC’s biggest drugstore - there’s literally two on every block. They have a frequent shopper program that gives you a $5 off on your next purchase when you spend $100. I had one such coupon was going to expire at the end of today. I didn’t have any drugstore needs, but I did need lunch.
How to find a cheap, nutritious meal with limited resources? Hmm….
I have a general aversion towards frozen meals (they make me sad) so that was out. Too hot for soup or pasta. Then I spied this beauty:
Bumble Bee Easy Peel Sensations Sundried Tomato and Basil Seasoned Tuna Medley. Whew, that’s quite a name! But quite a flavor, too! Really tasty - definitely will be a repeat purchase. Easy, quick, cheap source of tasty protein. They had a smaller size that came with crackers - but they looked sketch: white, cheap. I thought, I can do better. Enter Milton’s Multi-Grain Baked Crackers:
Really tasty - plus a much better nutritional and ingredients panel. That makes me happy. So here are my drugstore crackers and tuna:
Yum-O. I also had some street raspberries and Stonyfield Farm Organic YoCalcium Yogurt in Wild Berry (what’s with these long names?):
All together:
Lunch was 473 calories, 62g carbs, 12g fat, and 30g protein.
No plan for the afternoon…the apt desperately needs to be cleaned. And of course, must stay away from unauthorized snackage! Have a good one!

As crazy as this may sound, I always look forward to a trip to Duane Reade when I’m in NYC, since we don’t have any of those here :0)
I love strange flexible meals like this- your lunch is proof you can eat healthy anywhere you go
I’m pretty impressed with your creative drugstore meal, especially with the fact that it’s not only nutritionally balanced, but also cheap from the $5 off. Good job! Haha
VeggieGirl - When I first moved here DR was such a novelty!
Ashley - right on!
Kristie - hehe, thanks!
