Today is just busy, busy busy. I knew I wouldn’t have time for a workout this afternoon, so I had to wake up for my morning workout. I got up fairly easily at 6:50. I had a slice of Ezekiel bread with a tbsp of PB as a Pre Workout Snack:
Pre Workout Snack was 170 calories, 18g carbs, 8g fat, and 8g protein.
I had a good workout at the gym. I’m starting to focus more on strength training. I think that’s where my workouts have been lacking. Being a New Yorker and walking everywhere, I get tons of cardio. I think weight training is going to kickstart my weight loss. I started out with elliptical, then funky elliptical, then treadmill with weights, and finished up with standing mat work with weights: squats, lunges, etc. I have a whole new respect for mat work - my heart was pumping! Cardio Smorgas with Weights = 432 calories burned.
When I got to work, I had a large breakfast - my breakfasts have been on the smaller side these days, so I wanted to experiment a bit with size. I had 1 1/4c Heritage cereal with a large banana and 1c milk:
Breakfast was 410 calories, 82g carbs, 5g fat, and 16g protein.
This afternoon I have my much anticipated nutritionist appt at 1 PM, then back to work to scramble to get things done, then up to my apt to pick up a few things, shopping for mattresses with P (part of the girl-ification process), huge cleanup of P’s apt, then out to dinner with P and some of his friends at Peter Luger’s. I would ask you guys what to get, but it’s served family style, and these guys get steak, rare and lots of it. Oy. I’m feeling really overwhelmed and overcommitted today. I keep taking on more and more events and activities and I’m just feeling a little stretched. I just need to calm down and take one thing at a time. Have a great day guys!

Resistance training was the other thing I notice you don’t do a lot of. I definitely feel and look so much better when I focus on weights. Resistance training is the only thing that can actually change the shape of your body so that is a big plus. Also the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn all day long even while you sleep. One thing I have noticed with myself (and some not all of my clients) is that women seem to keep “weight” on at first when they start lifting weights seriously (don’t mean body building :)) so just keep that in mind and don’t get discouraged if this happens to you. Once I went down 2 pant sizes and only lost about 2 pounds on the scale. At other times when I slacked on my weight training my weight stayed exactly the same but my pants didn’t fit me! Can’t wait to hear about your appointment today!
Ahh, don’t feel overwhelmed!! Just take the day one step at a time, and I’m sure all will be well.
I just returned to weights after a very long break. I get tons of cardio - walking and an hour run or elliptical most days - and I do pilates a lot. But I was getting a little bored with my usual routine. I’ve definitely enjoyed trying some new things and remembering how GOOD it feels after you’ve lifted. I’m hoping it will shake up my weight loss a little, too.
Mmmmm Peter Luger’s! My absolute favorite steakhouse meal is a rare filet with sauteed mushrooms and creamed spinach, with a couple (large) glasses of wine. Yum! Enjoy your night, Kate, and I hope you have a little time this weekend to totally unwind and relax after a crazy week.
Hope your meeting with the nutritionist goes well and that your day slows down a bit. Whatever it is you need to do I’m sure that you are more than capable of doing it. Hang in there girlie!
I realized that about cardio, too…I used to focus on it, but then I was like, what the hell am I doing on a treadmill when I walk everywhere I go? Now I just do about thirty minutes of whatever and use the rest of my time for strength training.
StephOrlando - That’s really interesting! Yeah I think I might start taking a weight lifting class twice a week, then focus on cardio with light weights/ab/mat work 4 or 5 days a week. How does that sound to you?
VeggieGirl - Thank you!
CourtneyS - I asked Keri what I shouldn’t get at Peter Luger’s tonight, and the first thing she said was creamed spinach! Haha! She did recommend what I should get: salad, steak or fish (she demonstrated portion sizes) and steamed veggies). I’m going to have wine too - I need it after this week!
Danielle - Aw thanks!
Arielle - Totally, right? Definitely a good call, I think.
