I have a million to-do’s, appointments, and get-together plans swimming around in my head - I feel like I’m wading through muck! I love being busy - but sometimes I get so busy that I forget that I chose to be busy in the first place! I have to remember to cherish every day - it’s the only one I’m going to get!
This morning I kept my word and did a morning workout. I couldn’t decide whether to a) attend 7 AM Total Body Conditioning Class (which would require getting up earlier than normal) 2) do a regular machine/weight workout at the gym (good use of the gym, since I’m going to be away from it for a while - but not that inspiring) or d) do a run and weight training at the gym (fast, effective, but encroaching on C25K territory). I decided to do d). Running is addictive! There was some question of my calorie burn in the comments, so I’ll just address it here. The other day when I burned 500 calories - I wasn’t exactly clear. I burned 500 calories from 20 min of running with my HR in the 160s the whole time, plus an additional 15 min of walking (to get back home from where I was running) with my HR in the 140s-150s - then the couple flights of stairs in my apt building (walk-up - UGH), which always gets my HR back into the 160s. Then I do some stretching and stuff in my apt while my HR dies down. The other day it added up to 519 calories, but this morning it was only in the 400s - it depends on how far away I am from my apt when I finish my run. So even though mentally I feel like ‘20 min=500 calories!’, there’s actually more that goes into it. Run and weights = 438 calories burned.
I’m feeling really good and strong this morning - amazing what a morning workout will do. Even more, what an OUTDOOR morning workout will do. Just amazing for the body and soul. Normal summer breakfast when I got to work: 1c cereal, banana, and 1c milk:
This afternoon I have my second appt with Keri, my nutritionist. We’re going to evaluate this last week of my eating and exercising - gulp! Have a great Monday!

Hey Kate,
Love your blog.. Quick question. What heart rate monitor do you use and would you recommend it?
Thanks,
Danielle
Yay morning workouts! They automatically make the day better

Oooo, and do tell what Keri says at your appointment. I’m living vicariously through you and your nutritionist
Happy Monday!
So excited you caught the running bug!
Being busy is definitely a love-hate situation for me.
I hope your nutrition session goes great!
Your post was inspiring! I want to get up early in the morning and exercise!! =D
i really need to work out in the morning more, and outdoors (when weather permits - england is famous for its drab and fickle weather…) i have the same question as one of the comments, what HR monitor do you recommend?
Danielle and mi - I have a Polar F4 and I definitely recommend it. It gives me everything I need: measures my heart rate and counts calories!
Justy - heheh, check out the latest post!
UVAJess -:D ME too! I never thought I would be one of those ‘weird running people’.
Sharon - Aw, yay! Thanks!

Hi Kate! I just wanted to say that I really love your blog and how honest you are with us about things you are dealing with. Also, just wanted to say that I smiled when I saw your choices for your workouts were listed a), 2), and d)…just like in a movie I heard once =) Maybe you meant to do that, but it made me smile.
HAHA!!! This is going to drive me CRAZY now!! I’m thinking Dumb and Dumber-ish…but, no, I don’t remember!! AAAHHH! Don’t you hate that?!
Also, I really really appreciate reading the advice that your nutritionist gives you. So much information is out there about how many calories to eat to lose, etc., but its nice to hear what a professional says. Thanks for including that!
^^theresa, i’m thinking one of the home alone movies, maybe?
Bee, you are officially awesome. Well done!
