  • Dinner with Wilbur

After blogging, Peter took a nap and I went to the grocery store. My goal was to get lunch materials, fruit, cereal, yogurt/milk/cheese - basics that could be eaten in a week. I’ve been living in New York for two years, and my parents live in a townhouse-area of Virgina - so it’s been a while since I’ve been in a rural grocery store. It blew my mind! It was frickin huge! Oh MY GOONESS! There was so much of everything - just incredible. Not to mention the store itself was ginormous - huge highway-sized lanes for like 60 ppl in the store total. I overheard someone saying the store was full today - I couldn’t believe it - the place was totally dead, considering the amount of space they had. Probably two city blocks - just incredible. Even the carts were so freaking big - I’m a tall girl, but I felt like a 3 year old behind a tractor, pushing this thing! I couldn’t control it. Collisions definitely insured.

You know me, I took this as a chance to investigate my two food loves: cereal and bars. This was the cereal aisle:

It went all the way down to the end! All cereals - easily 100 different types. Since I seriously disobeyed the Keri Rule ‘1 bar/day’, I tried to search for a cereal with more fiber than sugar to make good. It was TOUGH. Out of those 100 cereals, less than 15 fit the bill. There were some delicious sounding ones though. Check this out:

Honey Bunches of Oats: Just Bunches. Oh my goodness - heaven in a bowl. Great idea for a cereal. Unfortunately it had aprox gazillion grams of sugar. I ended up with this guy, who had (by some stroke of luck) 8g fiber to 7g sugar:

So get excited for tomorrow morning. I know I am.

I was almost done with shopping when I found this aisle:

Ahhhhh! So many bars! And some I’ve never even heard of before!

Kashi Roll?!?! And tons of new flavors of my usual faves. Unfortunately I made the mature decision to draw the line at 3 bars/day. :P But I was hungry. I almost convinced myself it would be cool. Haha, oy. As I was leaving the grocery store, I had a snack of a sadly mushy nectarine.

Whoo - I am healthy and not going to OD on energy bars! (Mom - I was not in drive during the taking of this picture. Firmly in park. Engine off.)

I collected Peter from his nap and we unpacked groceries and hung out a bit before heading to an early dinner (since we’re definitely headed to an early bedtime). We went to one of my childhood favorites, Ruth & Wimpy’s. As a kid, I always ordered the Wimpy Steak and Cheese (aka heart attack/extra 20 lbs on a stick). I almost got it tonight - but I couldn’t quite do it - it’s freaking huge. Instead I ordered lazy steamed lobster (called lazy because they do all the cracking/taking out the meat for you), with a baked potato, and corn on the cob:

I ate 3/4ths of the lobster meat, 3/4ths the baked potato, and all of the corn. I did want to indulge a little bit though - so I had half of one of their AMAZING rolls with their INCREDIBLE cinnamon butter:

and I ordered some of their scorched-into-my-memory-they’re-that-good onion rings, which I split with Peter:

Peter got a Blueberry Freeze, which is basically a blueberry milkshake - but so outstandingly delicious. I snuck around 1/3:

Such a delicious dinner! I’m definitely full, but I don’t feel like I went too crazy. I probably ate more food than normal today, but I’ve also been awake for more hours than normal. I think it will even out - I was very good at eating when I was hungry and not just bored/tired/frustrated.

To end our first partial day in Maine, here’s me with the Ruth and Wimpy’s mascot Wilbur. Night everyone!

that looks like my grocery store! it seriously is huge—i always spend hours there, not only because i stop to look at every item but for the mere fact that the store is about 5 miles long. i pretty much get my exercise in for the day just by walking through it and pushing those giant carts.

that roll with cinnamon butter does look amazing. i LOVE flavored butters and always have way way too much. good job with the portion control on the bread!

That is the biggest craziest most full grocery store I have ever seen. I am INCREDIBLY jealous of the fact that you got to roam those insanely stocked cereal and bar aisles. I swear it would take me at least half an hour just to get through looking at everything in those aisles. I want to find a grocery store like that sooo badly!

I have a store like that at the corner of my “suburban” street! My husband can be gone for hours at a time-lost in there, checking out all the aisles. I still love my Trader Joe’s though.

hahaha…it made me laugh how you thought that grocery store was so big…that’s what most of mine are like! LOL! Makes me wonder if you’ve ever been to a Sam’s Club or Cosco? that’s where they sell everything in bulk..and the aisles are HUGE with HUGE baskets and HUGE amounts of food! hahahaha…

but your dinner looks great and that blueberry milkshake sounds so good!

    have a great day tomorrow!!!

Looks like a normal supermarket to me! ;) Guess those NY ones are tiny!
Oh, and I just signed up for a 5k! I start grad school for genetic counseling soon and just got some info from them on this 5k that’s to benefit Huntington Disease. I run a few times a week, but I’ve never actually done a race so I’m kind of excited!
Looks like you’re enjoying the vacation already! And cinnamon butter=heaven!

Casey - hehe, ‘When in Rome..’

VeggieGirl - Can’t wait to go back to that grocery store!

Sarah - I made Peter eat the rest very quickly so I couldn’t change my mind about eating the other 1/2 of my roll.

    Kath - THANKS!

Kristie - I think I may have to allot an entire sightseeing day to that grocery store.

    Tina O. - That’s because TJ’s rules.

    Melissa S. - I haven’t been to a Sam’s Club or a Costco! I can’t even imagine!

Megan - Oh good, this is a common occurrence then! Dang NYC messing with my head.

Tina - I did, but we went on a huge bar/snack buying spree at TJ’s before we left - so I couldn’t buy anymore bars in good conscience.

Arielle - RIGHT?!? I bet it’s frickin amazing.

    Sammie - Hola, Eastport! :)

Betsy - You’re spot on. Oh NY.

Justy - YAY for 5K!!! Keep me posted!

CourtneyS - Aw thanks, you’re so sweet!

I am cursing you right now for drawing my attention to the new Honey Bunches of Oats flavor :). I have an odd obsession with that cereal- by odd I mean that I absolutely loose all control while eating it. Once I got a jaw ache from eating so much of it (non-stop cereal crunching is apparently hazardous to jaw health). YIKES!!!!

Sharon - You know, I tried a ThinkPink bar and it was freakin disgusting - some lemon flavor. Maybe I should give it another shot.

Melissa P. - Totally been there. Cereal jaw. The worst.
