Dinner

Another quiet night in – I’m so boring lately!  Sorry guys!  I will be so happy when this recovery is OVER!  This afternoon I had a snack of nonfat vanilla yogurt with strawberries:

Snack was 133 calories, 28g carbs, 0g fat, and 6g protein.  I love this combo!! It tastes just like strawberry shortcake.  I especially like the cool yogurt mixed with the hot berries – yum!

For dinner we ordered in Chinese.  I had to get my favorite: an egg roll!!

Sometimes I’ll get summer rolls instead of spring or egg rolls, because it’s the same stuff steamed instead of deep fried.  But tonight, I wanted the real thing. :)   I also had some steamed chicken and veggies:

It felt nice to get some veggies!!  Dinner was 521 calories, 80g carbs, 8g fat, and 37g protein.

I think the agenda reads: bed.  P is EXAUSTED and passed out at 9:30, and I’m not long behind.  Tomorrow I think pancackes are on the menu, P was talking about them all night for some reason.  Crazy boy. :P Night!

Hey guys,

Yesterday was the first day since I started the blog that I’ve gone an entire day without posting.  I kept meaning to, but I was tired all day long and I figured I shouldn’t push myself to do things because I think I ’should’ or because I ‘have’ to. I read this article in Body + Soul yesterday about perfectionism and how women put all these unnecessary, self-imposed requirements on themselves that only cause harm in the long run.  I know I won’t lose my readers due to one day of no posting, so why shouldn’t I skip it so I can rest?  The world won’t end, and life will go on.

Yesterday I spent the day dozing and lying around on the couch, as per the norm this week.  I started off the day with a bowl of banana creme muesli, made with 1/2c oatmeal, 1/2c nonfat vanilla yogurt, large banana, and a tbsp of flax:

A little while after that I had a cup of nonfat cottage cheese plus 2/3c of Pumpkin Spice Granola (softened, so I could eat it):

Then I got a treat in the form of more get well gifts!  Balloons from my parents (replacement balloons from the original ones the company accidentally sent which said ‘Happy Birthday!’:

Plus a gift basket from my co-workers:

So sweet of them!

A little bit later I had a PB & J on some whole wheat chollah:

And later, I had some mint fro yo:

When P came home, he brought M&M’s, gummy worms, and jelly beans – grr!  I had my share of each of those.

This morning, I started out with snacking on some M&M’s, I’m afraid to admit!  But for lunch, I got one of the veggie wraps from Bully’s:

I’ve eaten half of this so far.  Plus I got fruit dish which I’ve had a few bites from, and these french fries, which I’ve had about 10 of:

I like my fries crispy, and these are more doughy.  Not great.

So that’s what I’ve been up to (plus a few random scoops of coconut sorbet thrown in there)!  Eating junk and watching alot of tv.  I’m starting to get a little restless..I think I need to cool it with the junk, and start back with my usual eating.  Filling my body full of junk when it’s sick is the opposite of what I need to do.  I’ve just been giving into comfort foods a little too much.

Today is CSA day, so P’s leaving work early to pick that up.  Expect to see a new bounty tonight!

Hey guys,

I’ve spent the better part of today working on getting my new domain (www.winningfriendswithsalad.com) up and running on wordpress.org. Then I enlisted P to help me the second he walked through the door. We’re 85% done – I’ll be glad when this thing is up and running, probably tomorrow or Thursday at the latest. The majority of stuff is done, just alot of clean-up. Thank goodness for my ‘technical adviser’ – I’d be lost without him!

This afternoon I kind of lost track of my calories, but it’s just as well. That breakfast really filled me up – I had very little appetite for the rest of the day. At some point I had some garden vegetable crackers with 2 wedges of Laughing Cow:

And later I had some coconut pudding:

When P came in, he ordered dinner for the two of us. He ordered a grilled cheese and cooked spinach for me:

Plus a vanilla milkshake:

P said he got me the spinach because he said he knew I was ‘missing my vegetables’. :)

He’s right about that one – I’ll be happy to get back to normal eating! Night all.

Surgery went excellent!  Thank you all for your kind words.  Seriously, the best possible outcome I could have asked for: medium-mild pain, and huge results already.  Let me backtrack:

I did not sleep well at all last night!  I kept waking up on the hour, completely restless.  Worked to my advantage in the end because I was really afraid I would sleep through my call time – but of course, waking up at 7:30 was no problem.  A quick shower and final apt inventory later, we hopped in a cab to the hospital.

P and I got to the hospital at 8:30 on the dot, where I did some paperwork and they told me my surgery was scheduled for 10:30.  At 9 AM, they took me back to pre-op, with a kiss from a worried Peter.  There I changed into the most unflattering sack ever.  Luckily I got a bathrobe, which gave it some shape, and I folded up the sleeves as well – hey, I’m 23!  Let’s not add insult to injury.  :)

By 10:15, I started to get antsy.  I had finished every halfway decent magazine in the pre-op waiting room, and I could feel the adrenalin coursing through my body.  I started to pace, which led to jumping jacks, wall push-ups, grapevines, jogging in place, knee kicks, and finally stretching, breathing and meditation.  If you had told me 6 months ago that my biggest source of comfort in a stressful event was EXERCISE, I wouldn’t have believed you.  But it really made me feel better – just to get some energy out.  Despite the looks it got me. :)

They finally called me at 10:50 to talk to the surgeon and the anesthesiologist.  I was on the table by 11:10.  Tears ensued.

The next thing I knew I was waking up in the recovery room.  I rated my pain on a scale of 1-10 as a 6 – so not too bad! (And I am not one to downplay pain or suffer in silence, as my mother would say.)  I felt like I had been punched in the nose, and my mouth was painfully dry.  After 2 hours of dozing in out of Percoset and Demerol induced sleep, I was discharged.  A quick cab ride and four painful flights of stairs later, I arrived at my new home: the couch.

P was kind enough to been in touch with my parents all day through texts and calls, as well as preparing and tracking all my foods and meds.  He is, as my mom said today, ‘a mother’s dream’.  At the hospital, I had 1c cranberry juice (unpictured).  After settling on the couch, I had 125g oolong tea (unpictured).  About an hour later I had a green tea and a coconut popsicle:

About an hour and a half later I had about 3/4ths of this peach smoothie, ordered in from Bully’s:

And an hour after that, I had 1/3c of light mint chip frozen yogurt (unpictured).

P left to go to the gym, and made a skillful dinner of Annie’s organic mac and cheese when he came
home:

I ate about 1/3rd of this.

As far as results, my nose is definitely swollen, but no black eyes or packing needed!  But it’s visibly straighter and I have more breathing ability in my right side than I’ve had in years – and it’s only going to get better!  Despite being exausted and definitely unanimated – I’m doing alot better than anyone thought I would be at this point.  I’m taking Tylenol with Codeine and and antibiotic, as well as two different nose sprays.  Plus, I heard from the doctor that I can’t excercise for 10 days.  Boo.

Plan for tomorrow is more rest/recovery.  Hopefully the bleeding will stop soon.  Night!

For dinner, we decided to go out again for two reasons: a) I’m going to be stuck in the same four walls for a week or more so I wanted to get out of the apt while I can, and 2) we wanted sushi! And I can’t make sushi. :) (Not that I’ve ever tried, although I totally would) I chose sushi for my last solid-food meal because it’s both light and filling, and I love it. We went to a sushi place near us, Matsuri.

We started off with the cucumber wrapped eel roll:

I had two of the rolls.

Then we got the Sushi and Sashimi Plate for Two:

I had the right side of the plate (one of each type of the groups). SOO delicious. Matsuri never disappoints. I’m estimating dinner at 700 calories.

Peter is mopping the apt as I type (love him), which marks the end of our thorough cleaning of the apt. As for the rest of the evening, I’m going to introduce P to Flight of the Concords, try to stay calm, and go to sleep. :) I have to report to the hospital at 8:30 AM, so the plan is to wake up at 7:30, take a shower, and take a cab over. I’m not sure how much/how little I’ll be posting over the next two or three days . I may find comfort in posting and post as usual or I may want to sleep and stare at the TV all day. Who knows? But I will try to post when I can. Thanks guys, and wish me luck!

Another late post – sorry guys! This afternoon P and I spent on pre-surgery to do’s before Peter had his meeting at 6. While he was gone, I relaxed and did some stuff around the apt. When he got back, we watched Super Size Me while eating dinner. P had never seen SSM before so it was really interesting to watch it with him! Some great discussions ensued. I love that movie and never get tired of watching it.

We had talked about having wine with dinner (we’ve got about six bottles of wine in the house that we need to open), but ultimately I decided it wasn’t a great idea to have alcohol so close to my surgery. So I served lemonade mixed with water, served in wine glasses for flair:

P got some whole wheat challah rolls at the bakery this afternoon, so I used those to make a sandwich with Amy’s Californian Veggie Burgers, with mustard and ketchup on the side for dipping:

On the side I made a salad full of CSA goodies! Salad with lettuce, braising greens, and radishes, with a tbsp of Annie’s goddess dressing on the side:

This salad was AMAZING! These veggies tasted so pure and fresh and healthy. Just really incredible. You really could tell a difference from regular organic supermarket veggies. Dinner was 440 calories, 62g carbs, 16g fat, and 15g protein.

Heading to bed for another day of calming relaxation tomorrow. Night!

Hey guys! Dinner tonight was alot of fun. It was so great to meet Ari and Betsy in person. We’re definitely going to have to do it again. But let’s backtrack:

This afternoon when I got home from work I had a slice of Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel Bread with a tbsp PB:

Snack was 175 calories, 21g carbs, 9g fat, and 7g protein.

I had planned for this to be a pre workout snack, but after lunch I started feeling weird/sickly again. After I had this snack, I actually fell asleep! I woke up at 7:50 – our dinner was at 8! Whoops! I’m not sure what’s going on with me lately – Peter think I’m just dealing with alot of stress and nerves. I am getting pretty nervous about this surgery!

Anyway, I raced to meet the girls, who had already gotten a table. I started off with a glass of Chardonnay.

For an entree, I got the stuffed portabello mushrooms (I ate about 2/3 of this):

And the three of us split the maple cream tart for dessert.

After dinner, that temptress Arielle convinced us all to go to Billy’s Bakery for cupcakes! :) (Didn’t take much convincing!) I got one chocolate/vanilla and one vanilla/vanilla.

I ate one and gave one to Peter.

What a great night! I’m estimating dinner and dessert at 650 calories. Girls, we’ve got to do it again!

I’m heading to bed. Hopefully I’ll feel better tomorrow and get in a good workout in the morning. Night!

Hey guys, I’ve been feeling kind of off all afternoon.  Weird appetite, really tired – just in a funk.  Quick post and then off to bed.

The CSA pickup was a breeze.  Unfortunately because of a cold spring, the first few weeks will be small this year.  Here’s this week’s bounty:

From left to right: radishes, broccoli rabe, lettuce and braising mix.  It all looks and smells delicious!  I’m assured that next week’s crop will be much bigger.

After that I had a Luna bar:

Snack was 180 calories, 25g carb, 5g fat, and 10g protein.

I had intended this to be a pre workout snack, but I couldn’t get it together to go the gym.  I’ve been feeling sickly and feverish all afternoon.  So I’ve been snacking off and on and not really tracking it.  I really need to make sure that I’m okay for the surgery on Monday – so that’s my number one priority.  Hopefully I’ll be feeling better tomorrow to have a more normal day calorie and exercise wise.  Night!

Hey guys! Well, the Sex and the City movie was awesome, as predicted! I had my issues with it, to be honest, which I won’t go into on the blog for spoiler purposes, but all in all – I really liked it. I’d see the girls in anything, though. I’ll be there for “Sex and the City VI: They Don’t Call it Men-opause For Nothing” and watch as Samantha laments losing her dentures on some poor, unsuspecting 20 yr old. Polident, Sam, Polident! Even Carol Brady knows that.

Anyway, during the movie I snacked on a Clif bar, Maple Nut flavor.

Snack was 240 calories, 42g carbs, 5g fat, and 10g fat.

Then, when I got home, I made a small dinner. You guys saw my fridge, so you know it’s slim pickings around here. Plus, as I said I’m working on making sure to use all the groceries before buying new ones. So I made some roll ups using the deli meats and cheese P picked up.

Kind of a random dinner, I know. But it was tasty and filling, so I’m cool with it. Dinner was 108 calories, 3g carbs, 5g fat, and 13g protein.

First CSA pickup is tomorrow, wahoo! Yawn, night guys!

That’s been the theme of today: just do it. Lately there’s been alot of stuff in my personal life, work life, weight loss that I’ve been putting off and putting off – to my own detriment! When I just suck it up and do the things I don’t want to, I’m always so much happier for it! In the years since I’ve graduated college I think that’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned. I’m not going to wake up tomorrow with the perfect life. If I want to be 135 lbs, have a great job, big family, etc, etc then I have to make it happen. Perfect example: when I came back from the gym today, I realized I still hadn’t cleaned the refrigerator. I almost didn’t do it, reasoning I was too tired. And then I thought, ‘Kate, JUST DO IT!’ So I did! Since I still had my HRM on, I tracked my heart rate too, and I burned an extra 200 calories easy! Now. not only do I have a clean and ready for CSA goodness refrigerator (see for yourself):

But I also have a mopped kitchen floor, clean sink and counters, clean dishes, and Horseshoe has a washed and fresh ladies room. Everyone’s happy! I’m really going to keep that as my mantra: JUST DO IT. I know I’ll be alot happier if I do.

Anyway, when I got home from work today, I goofed around for a while and then had a slice of Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Bread with a tbsp Almond Butter:

Pre Workout Snack was 174 calories, 21g carbs, 8g fat, and 7g protein.

Cardio Smorgas at the gym: treadmill with weights, Cardio Wave, step mill, elliptical. I also did some mat work. Towards the end of my workout, I heard this song, which always makes me dream of being on DTV with the poor man’s version of Joey Lawrence. Swoon. Totally fitting, seeing as though I’m seeing SJP in Sex and the City tomorrow night!! Anyway, Cardio Smorgas=562 calories burned.

As I said, I came home an did an crazy clean of the apt, woohoo! After that, I had a small dinner of the last serving of Goddess Garbanzos.

Dinner was 195 calories, 28g carbs, 8g fat, and 5g protein. Even though I could have more dinner/dessert, I don’t think I will. Just because I can, doesn’t mean I should. Night guys! :)
