Hey guys!  I can’t believe I’m just getting my brunch post up!  I’ve really been trying to take the pressure off this weekend, which meant waking up leisurely, heading to the gym on my own time, then enjoying a calm outdoor brunch with Peter.  I’ve really been enjoying our calm QT together. :)

As I said, I woke up around 10:30 and was at the gym by noon.  It really took some prodding from both P and myself to get me there, but P was adamant about me having a workout.  And he was right – a hard workout and then brunch is one of my favorite pleasures in life.  I’m so lucky to have such a great support system!  Before I left for the gym I had half an Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin with a tbsp almond butter:

Pre Workout Snack was 174 calories, 21g carbs, 8g fat, and 7g protein.

At the gym I did Cardio Smorgas: treadmill with weight, Elliptical, Step mill, jogging on treadmill.  I tried to do the Cardio Wave, but it was malfunctioning.  That’s the problem with that thing -about every third time I want to use it, it’s broken!  Really annoying.  Cardio smorgas=479 calories burned.

After some cleaning up (myself and the apt), Peter and I headed to brunch.  We wanted to try a new place, so after a quick search we ended up with Good.  After a quick walk, we were settled at an outdoor table for a sunny brunch. :)

I started out with an iced coffee:

That’s P’s arm and Polo shirt! :)   Then we started out with a bread basket.  We’re both suckers for carbs – and these were totally worth it!.

Two spotted big guys were Lemon Blueberry Bread, on opposite sides was the Savory Cheddar Cornbread, and hiding down below were Warm Buttermilk Biscuits.  There was also The Best Pear Pecan Crumbcake:

Which really was the best Pear Pecan Crumbcake I’ve ever had!  All of these breads were amazing – loved the lemon blueberry, and the cheddar cornbread, and the biscuits were the perfect biscuit consistency and taste.  Just amazing!  I had 1/3 the crumbcake, 1/2 of each of a piece of the other three breads.

For an entree, I got the scramble of the day with peppers and Fontina cheese with asparagus and avocado, with greens on the side.

I ate all of the greens, none of the bread, and half of the scramble with half the avocado.  I’m estimating brunch at 750 calories.

At brunch, P and I made a list of all our pre-surgery to-do’s and to-buy’s.  So far we’ve hit up Duane Reade, the grocery store and done alot of apt cleaning.  For tonight, P has a meeting at 6 and then I think he wants to see SATC.  I’ll happily oblige!  Hope you’re having a great Saturday!

That’s been the theme of today: just do it. Lately there’s been alot of stuff in my personal life, work life, weight loss that I’ve been putting off and putting off – to my own detriment! When I just suck it up and do the things I don’t want to, I’m always so much happier for it! In the years since I’ve graduated college I think that’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned. I’m not going to wake up tomorrow with the perfect life. If I want to be 135 lbs, have a great job, big family, etc, etc then I have to make it happen. Perfect example: when I came back from the gym today, I realized I still hadn’t cleaned the refrigerator. I almost didn’t do it, reasoning I was too tired. And then I thought, ‘Kate, JUST DO IT!’ So I did! Since I still had my HRM on, I tracked my heart rate too, and I burned an extra 200 calories easy! Now. not only do I have a clean and ready for CSA goodness refrigerator (see for yourself):

But I also have a mopped kitchen floor, clean sink and counters, clean dishes, and Horseshoe has a washed and fresh ladies room. Everyone’s happy! I’m really going to keep that as my mantra: JUST DO IT. I know I’ll be alot happier if I do.

Anyway, when I got home from work today, I goofed around for a while and then had a slice of Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Bread with a tbsp Almond Butter:

Pre Workout Snack was 174 calories, 21g carbs, 8g fat, and 7g protein.

Cardio Smorgas at the gym: treadmill with weights, Cardio Wave, step mill, elliptical. I also did some mat work. Towards the end of my workout, I heard this song, which always makes me dream of being on DTV with the poor man’s version of Joey Lawrence. Swoon. Totally fitting, seeing as though I’m seeing SJP in Sex and the City tomorrow night!! Anyway, Cardio Smorgas=562 calories burned.

As I said, I came home an did an crazy clean of the apt, woohoo! After that, I had a small dinner of the last serving of Goddess Garbanzos.

Dinner was 195 calories, 28g carbs, 8g fat, and 5g protein. Even though I could have more dinner/dessert, I don’t think I will. Just because I can, doesn’t mean I should. Night guys! :)

Yikes.  This afternoon was definitely a lesson in the need to plan ahead! Before I left work, I had a Luna Bar:

Snack was 180 calories, 24g carbs, 5g fat, and 10g protein.

I got out of work early and managed to get the laundry and do my chores on time.  I was in my gym clothes about to walk out the door when I decided that, yes, I definitely did want to bake something tonight.  I looked around the kitchen and noticed we only had about 1/4c of sugar left.  So it had to be something that didn’t need a bunch of sugar.  I grabbed Veganomicon and flipped through it, finding a recipe for Vanilla-Yogurt Pound Cake that used firm tofu.  Well, I knew I had a block of tofu that was on it’s way out  – so even though I can take or leave pound cake, I decided on that.  I was reading through the recipe and saw that you needed to whip the tofu before using it.  And before I knew what I was doing, I was elbow deep in whipped tofu, when I was supposed to be at the gym!  Grr!  So fine, I’m making the recipe, cruising along, and I go to add the next ingredient, I find to my surprise that it’s 1 1/4c sugar!  Grr again!  So in the middle of the recipe (Martha Stewart would be appalled), I had to run next door to the expensive grocery store (Balducci’s) for an extremely overpriced bag of sugar (Grr three times!).  When I finally got it in the oven, it took over an hour to bake, keeping me trapped in the apt all that time.  During the baking, I calculated the recipe and was shocked to find that a thin slice was 207 calories, 30g carbs, 8g fat, 4g protein, and 18g sugar!! Grr, grr, GRR!  After it finally got out of the oven, it occurred to me that most pound cakes are light blond, and mine was dark – because I had used whole wheat flour!!  Oyy.  And although the cake is pretty good (Peter loved it),  there were just too many mistakes involved for me to be happy with it.  (Plus I don’t even love pound cake that much.)  Here’s the cake cooling:

And here’s Peter’s piece, smothered in warm raspberries:

I saved three pieces and am bringing the rest to the office tomorrow.  Between bowl liking and crumble snacking, I’m assuming I ate about 3/4 of a piece.  Snack was 155 calories, 23g carbs, 6g fat, and 3g protein.

While the cake was cooling, I grabbed a Pre Workout Snack of Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel Bread with a tbsp peanut butter:

Pre Workout Snack was 175 calories, 21g carbs, 9g fat, and 7g protein.

I had a great workout at the gym!  I did a Cardio Smorgas: treadmill with weights, Cardio Wave, Step mill, and Elliptical.  The real star of the workout was the Cardio Wave.  I had such a great burn on that guy!  Towards the end, I was really in a great groove on the Elliptical – total workout high!  I was on my last song – one of my favorite cardio jams – when I got a bad case of Elliptical foot.  You know, that painful, twitchy feeling in your feet after too many machines?  Ow!  I worked through it though.  Cardio Smorgas – 506 calories burned.

When I got home, I had minimal appetite, as per usual after a hard workout.  But I needed something, so I grabbed a yogurt and threw in some berries:

I ate about 3/4 of this.  Snack was 90 calories, 17g carbs, 0g fat, 5g protein.

I’m exhausted!  Night guys!

Whoo – get ready for a long post!

P and I headed out to Brooklyn on Saturday for Ellen’s Goodbye BBQ.  Unfortunately, it was raining and mucky all morning – so we had to move the party inside.  Everyone wanted to be on the blog – so there are quite a few cameos in this post.  Here’s was the initial spread:

More food came later.  What was paricularly interesting was the make-your-own strawberry shortcake spread:

Neat idea right? Plus homemade sangria, made by Brooke’s boyfriend Kyle (the thumbs-up in the picture):

Later, our friend Melissa brought a really delicious bean and avocado salad

The only thing was there were way too many sweet items, and not enough savory ones!  Everyone loves dessert!  Here was my plate: bean and avocado salad plus grapes.

I also split a cupcake with Peter:

Plus I tried a make-your-own strawberry shortcake, with my goofball friend Brooke in the background:

And here’s me with Ellen (I swear I don’t usually look this tall):

Our friends Rita and Bryan came and brought guacamole and Vegan ‘E’ cookies.  Here’s Rita and Ellen with the cookies:

I had one of these ‘E’ cookies. :)

On to our next activity! We headed up to Columbia campus for a cocktail and dinner, plus dancing and starlight reception.  Here was the main tent:

After we checked in, we went over to Peter’s class’s tent.  Here’s a shot of the inside of the tent:

And the tables:

I started out with a glass of white wine.  Here’s a shot of the bottle:

With my wine, I had 5 fruit kababs:

After some schmoozing and reminiscing (for Peter), we sat down to dinner.  Here’s my first plate, salad with blue cheese, plus a little latke:

With dinner, I had a cocktail: a whiskey sour.  I used to love these in college – they were definitely my drink of choice.

Then I went back for a second plate of salad and latke. :) The salad was sooo good, and the other options (fish, chicken, steak, etc) looked a little heavy – I knew my sweet tooth was going to get the best of me later (which it did!).

For dessert, I had a cherry cobbler:

This was really good – I split another one of these with P. :)

Then at the starlight reception, I had a glass of champagne and snacked on a bunch of chocolate desserts they had out.  YUM!  Of course I had to sample every type – amazing.  Then Peter and I danced like maniacs!  There was a live band playing old hits, and everyone was getting down!  I love live bands – they’re so festive!  It’s especially fun to see all the older people getting down and funky.  Soo sweet.  I definitely burned 300-500 calories easy.

So, to close the Columbia festivities, here’s the Columbia lion, the school mascot.  I think P really had fun being nostalgic and seeing old friends, so it was definitely a success.

P and I crashed at about 1 AM, and my parents called at 10:30 AM with a brunch invitation.  My parents, who live in Virginia, were up in NYC for my dad’s 35th Columbia Reunion and for their 30th wedding anniversary, which is this week as well!  The plan was to meet them up at a old Columbia hangout, the Hungarian Pastry Shop, at noon.

I knew I needed a AM workout after my day off yesterday, not to mention the extravagant dessert parade.  I booked it to the gym to get in a quick workout.  I did the stepmill and the treadmill with weights at full force!  Cardio smorgas = 427 calories burned. I wasn’t hungry when I woke up (never a good sign), but I knew I needed something in my stomach, so I had a banana before I left:

Pre Workout Snack was 125 calories, 32g carbs, 1g fat, and 1g protein.

We were a little late for brunch (whoops), but my parents had stopped for gelato, so I don’t think they minded!  P and my parents picked out pastries and then we headed to another Columbia haunt, The Heights, for brunch.  My mom and I started off with mimosas:

For an entree, I had the portabello mushroom with goat cheese and veggies sandwich, without bread, plus a huge salad of mesculun greens:

I only had a few forkfuls of the balsamic dressing.  Plus I had a complementary fruit cup:

Brunch was good, and it was great to see my parents!  P and my dad talked about Columbia the whole time, of course. :)   Brunch was estimated at 400 calories.

This afternoon the plan is to CHILL OUT.  We definitely need a rest after this weekend.  We also have another event for tonight.  Busy, busy, busy!

Hey all! Peter is still out partying the night away, but I’m home to do a quick post and then off to bed. This afternoon did not go as I would have hoped, in that I got stuck dawdling around the house, and then had to power errands run. I managed to get in a little cardio and weights at the gym, but not as much as I would have liked. It definitely would have put me in a better frame of mind if I had a good, hard workout under my belt before a party – but it was good enough. Cardio and weights = 300 calories burned.

FYI, I didn’t have a snack before my workout because my lunch was so heavy. I made the right call about that- I didn’t need one. My lunch held me through til dinner.

The agenda for tonight was dinner at Robert Emmett’s and then Casino Night at the Nokia Theater. So here’s the place cards at dinner:

I didn’t know this until I got to the reuinion: apparently Columbia University is made up of different branches: one is Columbia College, one is FU, the engineering school where P graduated from, and a couple others I don’t know the names of. So a bunch of the stuff tonight had ‘Columbia College’ written on it, which really tripped me up! My dad went to Columbia too, and actually graduated from Columbia College, so go figure. Every time P and my dad get together, all they talk about is Columbia. It’s nice that they have something in common. :)

Service at this resturaunt was TERRIBLE. But they had an open bar, so P was happy. :) I had a club soda and lime with dinner (sitting out the first round strategy). I started off with salad:

Sorry the photo was a bit blurry, I was trying to be discreet. Nothing special about this salad. For an entree, the choices were ravioli, chicken, or fish. I went with fish, which was a white fish. I think I made the right choice.

I don’t even think the fish was bathed in butter, so woohoo! I ate all the fish and veggies and none of the rice. Then for dessert, they had tirimisu:

This was good. Looking back, I don’t know if I should have finished this (which I did). Half would have been sufficient.

After dinner, we went to the Casino Night. Here’s me getting ready to play blackjack:

Everyone was given 1500 Columbia dollars to start with. P and I both cashed in 500 at the first blackjack table that looked ‘lucky’, whatever that means. Well, it turned out to be lucky! Peter’s pretty good, and our dealer didn’t know there was a 500 bet maximum, so within 20 min, we made over 15,000! Here are some pictures of the table:

On the left is P sticking the red card into the back of the deck. Right is the dealer shuffling.

With the Columbia dollars, you can buy Columbia gear: bags, cups, mugs, etc. As soon as I walked through the casino door and saw the spread, I knew what I wanted: a Columbia sweatshirt! (It should be noted that this was the most expensive item, of course.) Well, after 20 min at our lucky table, that baby was mine! Here’s me in my new favorite sweatshirt:

:)

Anyway, back to food. Here was the spread at the casino night:

To the right there is a huge veggie basket, with a pretty good variety of items. Unfortunately, my sweet tooth was on overdrive, so I mostly stuck to this:

I sampled all of these. Possibly twice. Soo good.

I also had a club soda and vodka at the Casino night to get my mojo flowing. :P

So that was the first event of the reunion. Definitely a splurge for me, but I didn’t do any permanent damage. I’m not going to attempt a calorie count, but I know it was over my needs. Since I kind of let myself eat whatever I wanted today, I’m going to have to be a little stricter with myself tomorrow. Two days in a row of poor eating will leave a very sad Kate on the third day. Tomorrow the plan is to hit the gym first thing in the AM, bake treats for the BBQ, attend the BBQ, and then attend the Columbia reunion, day 2: dinner and dancing under the stars. It’s going to be a loooong day – I better get some sleep!

I think one of the biggest reasons why I’ve been successful with weight loss this time around, and not in any of my previous attempts, is my new-found ability to change up my strategies. I used to think that if a certain strategy worked in the past, that’s the only strategy that will ever work for me. I remember for 6 months during Freshman year in college I worked out for 60 min on the elliptical at 6 AM. Not that it’s a bad workout schedule, but there was no room for flexibility. If I was sick, or had a late night studying (or partying) or whatever, it didn’t matter – I had to be at the gym at 6 AM for 60 min on the elliptical. I remember one time the gym was closed unexpectedly and I freaked out. It was that rigidness that made it impossible to keep up. It wasn’t a lifestyle – it was a schedule, and a rigorous one at that.

I bring this up because lately I’ve been getting crazy hungry after work because I’ve been waiting until after I work out to eat dinner. But by the time I get home from the gym, I ’ve lost my appetite and end up eating just to eat, which prevents me from trying new things or having fun with my meals. So I switched things up today in order to stay happy and satisfied all afternoon and evening. I had a small snack at the office, then another snack, dinner, then had my workout snack, then worked out. MUCH better! Here’s the breakdown:

Towards the end of the workday, my stomach began to growl. So I had about 7 raw cashews:

Snack was 55 calories, 3g carbs, 4g fat, and 2g protein.  That held me over.

Once I got out of work, I ran some errands including getting a polish change (to Galapa-ghost, a peachy-white) and hitting the drugstore. I had a new Lunabar along the way: Cookies n’ Cream Delight:

Snack was 180 calories, 26g carbs, 5g fat, and 10g protein.  This was a good flavor!  I am LOVING my quest for Luna bar flavors.  It makes snacking so fun! :)   (Love the deli flowers in the background!)

Once I got back home, I decided to have dinner! And because it was earlier in the evening, I had the energy to try a new recipe! I made black bean burgers from Veganomicon, served on a Ezekiel hamburger bun (seriously the best bun in the history of the world – go and buy some today!  You will not be sorry) alongside some blackberries and ketchup for dipping:

Even though I loved loved loved this burger, I realized after the fact that I messed up the proportions of the recipe.  Oh well.  Mine was still delicious (and actually less caloric!).  Dinner was 428 calories, 79g carbs, 3g fat, and 29g protein.  I have one of these burgers left…this will definitely be a repeat recipe.

So the last part of my switchup was my workout!  A few hrs after dinner I had a slice Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel Bread with a tbsp PB:

Pre Workout Snack was 175 calories, 21g carbs, 9g fat, and 7g protein.

At the gym, I did half my workout on the step mill, but got bored.  So I got off.  Switching it up again!  Who says I can only do the stepmill?  It’s a big gym – I can do whatever I feel like!  So I finished up with treadmill with weights, Cardio Wave, and elliptical.  Cardio Smorgas = 458 calories burned.

So now I’m home and feeling great.  The plan worked!….for today.  Who knows if it will work tomorrow?  But I do know that my ability to adapt to my changing needs that will keep me healthy for years to come. :)

Continuing in the spirit of the best day ever, I received the best t-shirt ever in the mail today. Here’s me on my way to the gym modeling the coolest t-shirt in creation:

Name the reference and I’ll give you special blog props. Or, you know, a good prize. Either one.

So if this isn’t the greatest day ever – I don’t know what is! I got home pretty early today – but still managed to put off the gym until the last possible moment. At some point in the afternoon I had a new flavor of Luna bar: Peanut Butter Cookie:

Cute story: Peter picked up some stuff grocery items last night and got a couple flavors of Luna bar that I’ve never tried before. I remarked that it was such a coincidence that he got only flavors I’ve never had and he said it was no coincidence – he’s been reading the blog and knew which types I have and haven’t had! So considerate! Pre Workout Snack was 180 calories, 23g carbs, 6g fat, and 10g protein.

As I said, I procrastinated again and did another last minute power session at the gym: fast and furious on the stepmill with a Podfitness workout. Stepmill = 475 calories burned.

When I got home, I made a huge smoothie: enough for servings for dinner and lunch tomorrow.

Dinner was 281 calories, 56g carbs, 3g fat, and 10g protein.

Night guys!

That’s me! After an annoyingly, stupidly stressful afternoon of errands I got home and did a whole bunch of goofing around at home. The gym was definitely on the agenda, but it took me a good couple hours to work up the motivation/strength to go – especially once Peter and I got home and were having some great catch-up time. During my crazy afternoon I had a Luna Bar on the street:

New flavor! Definitely a good one, although it might have been a little sickly sweet almost. Snack was 180 calories, 28g carbs, 4g fat, and 10g protein.

Back at the house, it was nearly 10 PM before I got it together to go to the gym. Before I left I had a Pre Workout Snack of 1/2c nonfat vanilla yogurt and 1/4 cup Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Cereal:

Pre Workout Snack was 175 calories, 36g carbs, 1g fat, and 9g protein.

Since I only had 30 min at they gym before it closed at 11, I had to make it count! I did a really intense workout on the stepmill. I was POURING sweat the ENTIRE time. Even though I burned a normal amount of calories, I did it in a much shorter period of time. It really made me feel great! Stepmill= 473 calories burned.

I have to admit, I am kind of on the fence these days about CP vs. NYSC. Even though CP is amazing, and I really like all they have to offer: great classes, SWIMMING (which I’ve really enjoyed), great pilates instruction, rock climbing, boxing, the list goes on…NYSC has one thing going for it: LOCATION. It is right across the street. This allows me to procrastinate all night, but still get in a great workout…or sleep late and still make it to the gym and work on time – both things I’ve been known to do. I don’t know. I’m going to take some time to think about it. NYSC is so easy for my schedule that I can’t NOT workout. But CP is such an experience – really taking my fitness to a new level. Sigh. I guess it’s quality vs. quantity. What would you do?

I wasn’t really hungry for dinner, so I let P determine the menu. His creation was turkey and cheese on rye with mustard – typical boy sandwich. :)

Dinner was approximately 400 calories.

Night everyone – I’m exhausted from that workout!

It’s been a pretty calm day so far.  Not much to report on this end.  As promised, for lunch today I had the other two scallion rolls from last night’s dinner:

Plus a cup of nonfat cottage cheese and 6 oz street blackberries.

As you know, I’m partial to blueberries, but the blueberries weren’t looking too hot today, and these blackberries looked great!  Plus, it’s always good to switch things up.  Lunch was estimated at 498 calories, 30g carbs, 1g fat, and 31g protein.

I have a few errands to run around town this afternoon, so it will be good to get out into the sunshine!  After work I’m headed straight to the gym to test out my new sneakers!  I’ve been desperately overdue for some new sneakers and I found a great pair at DSW this weekend on sale!  My old ones were purchased at K-Mart two years ago for $15 – so yeah, definitely overdue.  I can’t wait to work out in these guys – they’re like walking on marshmallows!

Hey all! Sorry for the late post, I’ve been taking it easy this morning. Well, last night was both a success and not-a-success (’failure’ is too harsh). At the bar, I expected Jeff and I to have two rounds of drinks – standard, right? I cleverly (or so I thought) sat out the first round, opting for a club soda with lime, intending to get my vodka soda the next round. Well, the bar we were at was doing table service, and our server was SOOOOOO slow. After the first round Jeff ordered fried calamari, which I can take or leave, so no real sacrifice there – but since the server never came back for our second round of drinks, we decided just to call it a night. So when I got home I realized I had a good 150~ calories to spare. Well, I dug into the chocolate chip bag and ended up snacking on 1/2c. Grr. It was totally emotional – by the end of it, I didn’t want any more, but the bag was almost done and I just wanted it out of the house, so I kept eating. Midnight Snack was 431 calories, 50g carbs, 26g fat, and 6g protein. On the flip side, if I had the cocktail during the first round, I might have eaten the calamari, gone to the bar for a second drink, and eaten the chocolate chips when I got home. So I don’t know – what do you think I should have done?

Anyway, despite my late night slip up, I had a good weigh in this morning at the gym. Even though I’m still maintaining at 168 lbs, I lost an inch around my waist and an inch around my hips. I’ve only recently (within the past two months) started measuring myself. When I first started losing, I was losing a couple lbs a week, so it was a big difference. But now that I have less weight to lose and are incorporating weight training, measuring has become more integral to keeping me seeing results. As we all know, muscle weighs more than fat, so it’s important for me to see that even though the scale is the same, I am getting smaller. Anyway, today I worked with weights, did some matwork, walked the track, and did a Podfitness workout on the Elliptical. Before I got started I had a new flavor of Luna Bar: Chai Tea:

Kind of a weird flavor for a bar. It tasted exactly like Chai Tea – but not necessarily in a good way. Meh, it was okay. Pre Workout Snack was 180 calories, 25g carbs, 5g fat, and 10g protein.

Workout was good – not much to report there. I had planned to go swimming, but when I went to change I realized I forgot my goggles, and by that time it was 12:30 PM, so I just wanted to get started with the day. Elliptical and Weights = 501 calories burned.

On my walk home, I got myself a treat:

Swoon. (Obviously this was full when I got it.) When I got home I made myself a brunch of an Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin with 2 tbsp almond butter and a banana:

Yum. Brunch was 448 calories, 67g carbs, 18g fat, and 15g protein.

Not sure what the day holds – I have it all to myself! I may lay out and read a bunch of magazines. I also have a 20% off card for Banana Republic. Hmm…what decadent options! Have a great Saturday!
